How to approach a hard subject regarding addiction

My nephew has taken on a terrible addiction. He has chosen this as a means of escape. He became quite depressed and instead of finding a way to pick himself up he has chosen a darker path.
How do I start a conversation with him about it? What would work best? So nervous to say anything (he's so closed now) but I must. Just need some encouragement. Thanks.
