1 Corinthians 11:3-10:

If a priest’s daughter sleeps around, burn her
Leviticus 21:9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by playing the harlot, profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.” RSV (What about the sons who sleep around?) -
God had sons, he had never daughters
Genesis 6:1–2 “When men began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair; and they took to wife such of them as they chose.” RSV
- In Noah’s Ark, female animals are mates or property of males
Genesis 7:2 “Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate.” RSV
- Wives are considered to be property of the males in the 10 commandments
Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” KJV (The Commandments are addressed to males. This is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:21.)

Exodus 21:7–9 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed; he shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt faithlessly with her. If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter.” RSV (This is in the chapter immediately after the Ten Commandments.)

Female as property. If a man rapes a single woman, he has to pay her father and marry her
Deuteronomy 22:28–29 “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.” RSV (You broke it, you buy it.) -
A daughter/niece is given as a reward for violence
Judges 1:12–13 “And Caleb said, ‘He who attacks Kir’iath-se’pher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife.’ And Oth’ni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.” RSV -
A woman is acquired in a real estate transaction
Ruth 4:5 “Then Bo’az said, ‘The day you buy the field from the hand of Na’omi, you are also buying Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the dead, in order to restore the name of the dead to his inheritance.’” RSV -
David purchased his wife with 200 foreskins
1 Samuel 18:27 “David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines; and David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife.” RSV -
Please with his virgin daughters
Genesis 19:6–8 “Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him, and said, ‘I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.’” RSV (Although Lot spoke these words, he was favored by God. There is no biblical condemnation of this horrible act, even from God’s angels—both male—who were watching.) -
Kill female witches (not male)
Exodus 22:18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” KJV (The NRSV has “female sorcerers.” This one verse has resulted in the deaths of many thousands of women through history.) -
The God wants your son but not your daughter
Exodus 22:29–31 “You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me. You shall do likewise with your oxen and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with its dam; on the eighth day you shall give it to me. You shall be men consecrated to me.” RSV
- Rulers sacrifice male animals but commoners sacrifice female animals
… Leviticus 4:22–23 “When a ruler sins, doing unwittingly any one of all the things which the Lord his God has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, if the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish.” RSV
Leviticus 4:27–28 “If any one of the common people sins unwittingly in doing any one of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, when the sin which he has committed is made known to him he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed.” RSV

A mother is doubly unclean, if she has a daughter. Why ain’t she unclean if she has a son ?
Leviticus 12:1–5 “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to the people of Israel, If a woman conceives, and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying; she shall not touch any hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed. But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her menstruation; and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days.’” RSV -
Females have lower monetary value
Leviticus 27:1–7 “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to the people of Israel, When a man makes a special vow of persons to the Lord at your valuation, then your valuation of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary. If the person is a female, your valuation shall be thirty shekels. If the person is from five years old up to twenty years old, your valuation shall be for a male twenty shekels, and for a female ten shekels. If the person is from a month old up to five years old, your valuation shall be for a male five shekels of silver, and for a female your valuation shall be three shekels of silver. And if the person is sixty years old and upward, then your valuation for a male shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels.’” RSV (Notice that the adult female/male ratio was 3/5, the same as the early American Constitutional “Three-Fifths Compromise” over the value of slaves.) -
Menstruation is an infirmity requiring a sin offering
Leviticus 15:19, 29–30 “When a woman has a discharge of blood which is her regular discharge from her body, she shall be in her impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. … And on the eighth day she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, and bring them to the priest, to the door of the tent of meeting. And the priest shall offer one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her before the Lord for her unclean discharge.” RSV -
Wives suspected of infidelity must endure a cruel test
Numbers 5:15–31 “Then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and bring the offering required of her … a cereal offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance. And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the Lord; and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. And the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and unbind the hair of the woman’s head. … And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has acted unfaithfully against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become an execration among her people. But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children. This is the law in cases of jealousy. The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.” RSV (Philandering husbands endure no such test.) -
Inheritance goes through male relatives, unless a daughter is the only survivor but the daughter can only pass her inheritance on to males
Numbers 36:8–12 [Moses speaking] “‘And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the people of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that every one of the people of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers. So no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another; for each of the tribes of the people of Israel shall cleave to its own inheritance.’ The daughters of Zelo’phehad did as the Lord commanded Moses; for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelo’phehad, were married to sons of their father’s brothers. They were married into the families of the sons of Manas’seh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.” RSV -
God allows polygamy, for men only. Why not for women ?
Genesis 4:19 “And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.” RSV -

Genesis 26:34 “When Esau was forty years old, he took to wife Judith the daughter of Be-e’ri the Hittite, and Bas’emath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.” RSV
Genesis 28:9 “Esau went to Ish’mael and took to wife, besides the wives he had, Ma’halath the daughter of Ish’mael Abraham’s son, the sister of Neba’ioth.” RSV -
Gideon had many wives and a mistress
Judges 8:30–31 “Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, for he had many wives. And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abim’elech.” RSV (Remember this next time you see a “family values” Gideon Bible in your hotel room.) -
God murdered a husband in order to increase David’s harem but he needed more and then David’s wives were taken and raped outdoors, to punish
1 Samuel 25:2–44 “A certain man in Maon, who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy. … His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite. … David said to his men, ‘Each of you strap on your sword!’ … About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal and he died. … Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. … Abigail quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife. David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel, and they both were his wives. But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel son of Laish, who was from Gallim.” NIV
2 Samuel 5:13 “After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him.” NIV
2 Samuel 12:11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.’” NIV
- And David’s son raped his mistresses
2 Samuel 16:21–22 “Ahithophel answered, ‘Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.’ So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.” NIV
Then David punished the mistresses by locking them up forever
2 Samuel 20:3 “And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house, and put them in a house under guard, and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.” RSV-
Men can make vows, but a woman’s vow can be annulled by her father or husband
Numbers 30:1–8, 16 “This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said. When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or obligates herself by a pledge and … her father forbids her when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her. If she marries after she makes a vow or after her lips utter a rash promise by which she obligates herself and … her husband forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her. … These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living at home.” NIV -
Your firstborn son is favored in the will, even if he is from a hated wife. Why doesn’t this rule imply to firstborn daughter ?
Deuteronomy 21:15–17 “If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other disliked, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the disliked, and if the firstborn son is hers that is disliked, then on the day when he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons, he may not treat the son of the loved as the firstborn in preference to the son of the disliked, who is the firstborn, but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the disliked, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the first issue of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.” RSV -
A woman who is not a virgin on her wedding night shall be stoned to death.
Deuteronomy 22:20–21 “But if the thing is true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has wrought folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father’s house; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.” RSV (Damaged property must be discarded.) (In our eal life there are many girls who break their virginity before marriage so they all should be killed) -
A man can simply divorce his wife if he doesn’t like her …
Deuteronomy 24:1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a bill of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house …” RSV
And how about the women ? Lets see
But they can’t be remarried. She is defiled and abhorrent Deuteronomy
24:1–4 “… she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter husband dislikes her and writes her a bill of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring guilt upon the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.” RSV
- A woman has to marry her dead husband’s brother. Note- Here he has not said only her husband’s brother
Deuteronomy 25:5–6 “If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married outside the family to a stranger; her husband’s brother shall go in to her, and take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his brother who is dead, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.” RSV (This is all about patriarchy and inheritance, not love or family values.)
But God killed a man who did not impregnate his brother’s wife
Genesis 38:8–10 “Then Judah said to Onan, ‘Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.’ But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife he spilled the semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother. And what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord, and he slew him also.” RSV (This is the origin of the word “onanism.”)- Wow he likes pure virgin girls
Virgins were considered war booty-
Numbers 31:17–18 “Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” RSV
Virgins were last in the list of war booty
Numbers 31:25–35 “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast. … And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses. And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep, And threescore and twelve thousand beeves, And threescore and one thousand asses, And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.” KJVTake one or two girls as war booty Judges 5:30 “Have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two?” KJV (This is part of a hymn of praise to God.)

You can have sex with a captured slave (whom you orphaned), but if the sex is bad, you can’t sell her
Deuteronomy 21:10–14 “When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the Lord thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.” KJV (Used sex slaves are worthless.) -
