What is communication in a relationship?

I just started dating this guy a month ago. And a month ago he was sweeter, had a little more time for me, and seemingly interested in me. Now, it's just like eh. He said we'd communicate but our conversations are dying and he seems disinterested. I've asked him if something was wrong and he said there wasn't. Am I overthinking? Why is dating hard?
