@AXES it is gross but at least they don't eat humans
Can non-human animals commit suicide?
-
This is a very interesting question.
I think this depends on how we define the word "suicide". Do animals have a concept of "Death"?
For animals, I think suicide will come in a form ofself destruction
to protect their habitats or youngs. What are your thoughts about this?

@sᴛʀᴀɴɢᴇʀ but are animals aware of "Death"?
Yes animals are self-aware.
If they were not self-aware, they would not be able to distinguish themselves from other animals. They wouldn't be able to tell the difference between mate, offspring, and self. They would not know to seek food and shelter. They would not know to avoid predators and protect family members. They would not live in the groups that they identify with but would instead wonder off aimlessly without ambition to survive.

Because we get only news about humans mostly, but even animals commit suicide just google for those news and you will see that we humans are not the only one who commit suicide.

Animals are dumb they can't commit suicide maybe accidental
@Qui_qqq Despite what you have heard, animals are not stupid, they don't suicidally hurl themselves off cliffs, and they don't explode

I disagree that animals are dumb. I have found that the animals I have been in contact with are not stupid. The lack of a common language in Wich to communicate is a hurdle as well as knowing how the animal you are dealing with communicates.
That being said I know that animals grasp the concept of death but I don't think they know anything about taking their own lives or what things can kill them if it isn't a natural occurence as in nature.
How about whales? They're mammals. Very complex language. Unknown how intelligent but probably along the lines of dolphins who are supposed to be in the category of humans as far as that goes. They beach themselves and I'm quite sure they know they can't survive out of water. -
@mr_peanut haha..this one was also cited in google (https://www.britannica.com/story/do-lemmings-really-commit-mass-suicide).
some of them just drown, but im not sure if its called a mass suicide if their true purpose is just to find a new home.

I don’t know about other animals, but many scientists have agreed that Dolphins possess the self awareness to kill themselves
“Dolphins have the physical ability to commit suicide by voluntarily holding their breaths until they die. Their brains are complex enough to allow for a sophisticated capacity for emotion and the kinds of thinking processes that would be involved in complex motivational states, such as those that accompany thoughts of suicide.”The very same animal that is said to be one of the only other mammals that partake in sexual behaviour only for pleasure, are known for gang raping their females and for being capable of suffering from mental illnesses shared with humans such as depression.
There have been quite a few reported cases of captive dolphins, purposely refusing to take any breaths until they drown themeselves due to depression and such and if that isn’t suicidal behaviour, then I don’t know what is.

@wtfjudith
You know us humans cannot refuse to breathe until we die. Once you pass out your brains normal motor skills take over and you start breathing again. I guess that is different for mammals that have to surface in order to breathe.
Although it does make me wonder what part of the process is different. Is it just not being able to get to the surface in time? The lungs full of water from the motor reflex? Or is breathing a concious decision dolphins have to make? -
