  • When I was marching with the Chartists during the 1936 Jarrow strike, the legislation for labour reform bills appeared as luminous pages floating in mid-air near the top of street lamps. We would monkey up there but they would fly away as if detecting our approach leading to a frantic chase across the city. Those we managed to catch lead to increased job security, better working conditions and sickness pay.
