In Chinese, you 喝(drink) soup.

Anyways ,You eat the solid in soup & drink the broth.

& If a soup is thick enough that you have to chew I'd call it a stew.

There reaches a certain consistency that what was once a drink is now a soup. It is this most precarious of thresholds that dictates whether the food is eaten or drunken.

Best just to sup on soup . :joy:

I think technically you ARE eating soup because you're still making some effort to break it down in your mouth before you swallow. It's not like a beverage where it just directly goes down.

@WtfJudith You didn't put fourth option -both. If you did, i'd choose it.

1. When we drink a liquid, we pour it in a glass and drink it directly by our mouth (without even a spoon)
2. When we eat something, we serve it in a bowl and then eat it with a spoon (or 1+ spoons)
   This same logic is applicable to soup. Thickness or leanness of soup doesn't matter in this case. Eating soup in a bowl with a spoon will be called eating the soup. Pouring soup in a glass and drink it like a liquid (without a spoon), will be called drinking the soup. Usually, some soups are served in glasses, not all.
