• @Kakashi just like those ''omnipotence paradoxical questions'' can God make a square circle? xD

he can add a comma in the sentence tho xD

  • @Kakashi ugh :3 I mean, understanding the notion of omnipotence is not your cup of tea :3 * - * (neither mine)

  • A square circle is illogical, because one is not the other. It's just a play of words without real meaning. If you were to throw out logic of the equation (square circle) you cannot conclude anything at all, because you are using logic to conclude things in the first place.

Back to the op: this is a circular conclusion, meaning:

If god is omnipotent -> he can create a stone -> he cannot lift -> he is not omnipotent -> cannot create stone -> can lift -> is omnipotent, etc. well more or less. In other words that is not really a paradox, since there is no logic to it. But honestly I'm having a hard time putting this in the right words. Has been done though about 1500 years ago or something...

Maybe @Kakashi s take is easier to understand: If god has the ability to limit himself, that means he has the ability to take his own omnipotence away. However if he can do that, he is not really omnipotent in the first place because being able to limit himself just contradicts the concept of omnipotence. In other words a being that can be limited already is not omnipotent.

Btw. there is a solution to god not being limited: he can become completely human and at the same time remain completely god. Thus he is limited and unlimited at the same time. However talking about this philosohpically is scholastic debate and really leaves the domain of logic (this is not philosophy anymore it is just a solution to the problem that in itself cannot be understood by human logic).

  • @Kakashi

What if we take this POV to another level and add "another" god to the equasion?

Gods n1 and 2 are omnipotent
God n1 creates a rock only he can lift, thus making god n2 not omnipotent anymore... but then...
God n2 creates a rock only he can life, making god n1 not omnipotent...

At the end of the day who is omnipotent then? Isn't omnipotency something that should be compared with non "godly" creatures?

Very goo idea and absolutely correct! If there are 2 "omnipotent" gods, then there is not a single omnipotent god, or rather there is no god at all. The concept of omnipotence simply means that there can be only one.

May I be so blunt to also disagree with that? :yum: I think it was a very good idea to pose this question. You know people have debated these ideas for hundreds of years before they reached somewhat of a conclusion. And yet you realized the same problems they did, and I'm sure you also got a better understanding of the whole topic from this discussion. So why wouldn't you think about it?

But I'll also agree with you: understanding how "god works" is not my cup of tea either :3, not anyone's I guess

  • @Kakashi What do you believe in then?

  • @Azriel I believe that I deserve every pani puri in the world xD

  • :joy: :joy: :joy:

It reminded me of this comic i read sometimes!

  • You're missing the point, fella, that God can break any rules He likes, even logical paradoxes, because he's a Sid Vicious-style punk and we're all just nerds trying to interview Him and getting upset like Bill Grundy.

Besides which, I have photographic proof that he was able to lift The Rock.
