The end of Boredom?

  • I made a strange kind of experience. In the last few months I stopped doing certain things for various reasons. The things I stopped doing were things that I did for fun. Namely those are:

    • watching TV / Netflix
    • reading memes on the internet
    • spending excessive time on TWS, without interacting with others in meaningful ways
    • going out to party (okay I stopped that a lot earlier)

And strangely enough, I no longer feel bored. Like ever.

So I have a thesis: what makes us feel bored are actually the things that we do to not feel bored. Of course we do not feel bored while we are doing them, only while we are not. But my thesis is, that those things we do to not feel bored create the feeling of boredom afterwards and inbetween.

It might also have to do with the things I've replaced them with: in my case doing sports, learning guitar and praying... But I'm not so sure. I mean if I go ahead and look through memes again for an hour (I easily get stuck), afterwards I feel bored right away!

So now please, don't just post your opinion, that'd be boring 😋... Seriously though, you can post your opinion... But anybody who's willing and feels that boredom is a big part of his or her life: Try out not doing the things anymore you do for fun for at least a months (better 3), and tell me your experiences!

that's actually not a bad way to look at boredom. brains need all kinds of stimulation, but they really like quality stimulation. feeding your brain memes, social media & netflix is basically like eating junk food. feels good, but in the long run you're screwing your health up 😄

also, totally agreed, doing sports is a great way of relieving boredom! i have a habit of forcing myself to go outside & jog for a bit whenever i start to feel bored or lazy. it's like the human equivalent of hitting restart on your computer when it starts to hang 😄

Just a thought but... the things you started doing are meaningful (at least to you) so maybe that's the key and not what you used to do?
What I mean is... watching Netflix... yes it's fun and all that but after a while gets boring and so the boredom is alive during and right after. But when we talk about sports we are challenging ourselves, and trying to become a better self. Praying might be a thing that works for you cuz you are religious, for me it would be pointless... but you get it don't you?

Yeah, it certainly is true, that the things I've replaced the "fun" stuff with, are meaningful... You should try praying though 😋 with humility, not testing God...

Yeah, I do agree that the boredom is alive during watching. But I'm suspecting this might even be more general, that not just watching netflix or browsing is creating boring, but maybe all things that we do for fun.

  • @pe7erpark3r I hear you man! Spending a lot of free time on browsing Netflix and memes is a waste of time. It's awesome that you found a way out 😁

that is really smart. But takes a lot of time too lol, and you'd have to shower (or not 🤔) afterwards 😋
