@mikeJB said in Are there levels of punishment in hell, e.g., Matthew 11:23, but I don't understand it. Could you explain?:
i was taught "hell/hades" is nothing more than eternal death ie: eternal seperation from God. no ressurection. i dont have to suffer if that is the case. that should be more than enough in itself. to never feel peace again
Always be careful with the "nothing more" things that you hear.
However first I will agree with you: Hell is eternal separation from God. It's worth to note that that's a lot worse than to never feel peace again... Because God is present everywhere (he cannot not be present), thus Love is present in hell, and your separation from this Love means not just to be without it, but to be saying eternally "no" to this incomprehensibly great Love. That's what makes hell truly hellish.
And then I'll add that scripture also knows about a resurrection for the damned, they will rise to be judged and then be thrown into hell because of their decision to not accept God's Mercy in the face of Truth Himself.
It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. (Mt 5:29)
So, since you'll have a body in hell too, it might be more like a real place... But as you said, the main thing is not whatever detail is added, it would be enough to be without God for eternity.
