Honestly sometimes people justify their actions because they believe society just isnt fair and why should they bother follow the rules when its pretty clear that the elites of the world do not live by the same rules as everyone else. Now a days it seems like its easier to take a shortcut and get rich then it is to do things the straight and legal way. In the end I believe money is the root cause for most people or the lack thereof money.

lack of hope, education, self-respect, empathy, in this order, as i see thing in my country. The lack of resources, faith and jobs are like waaaaaay down the list of probable causes, i guess.

All the above mentioned topics can cause criminal behavior.
Poverty and Unemployment can make criminals to satisfy their basic human needs.
Lack of an education or a proper upbringing will fail to install a proper moral compass to guide the person through tough times creating criminals.
Religion could create criminals of the worse kind by disillusioning them with fanatic ideas as in case of Daesh or the Christian crusades.
Or it could be the one perverted idea that "You are better than everyone else and only you deserve it" can create the worst criminals as with Nazi germany or Myanmar army with Rohingyas, or Rwandan genocide.
But most of all its Bad Times, one bad day, or one bad decesion that moves people to the dark side, They say tough times dont last tough people do. So if you can stick through the bad times you'll definitely have a better future.
