Or, in a 1 out of 100 situation, im wrong, and hypothetically the site did get hacked for no reason by a good ass programmer that didnt even destroy the site down completely and only obstructed public chat. Seems highly unlikely.

First- the accounts wouldve been banned straight away
And secondly- i would actually find out the identity by using a specific mod power(which is not really a safe power if in the hands of the wrong people)

The massive overload should be over 24h after the incident, when i spammed, ( it was for a very good reason btw, im not batshit crazy), the site got back to normal after 2 days. This should be over in around 12 hours.
I would check either every hour or every 2 hours.

So, to explain things more clearly, here is how things went.
The owner spammed the topic box, made 2 other accounts, and used them to spam the public chat.
After the spam, the owner got on his normal account, and posted a gif of a woman aging.
So its either an act of drunkness, or him removing the public chat, while faking a spam as an excuse.

To be honest, i dont think the site was hacked.
My opinion might be too fucked up to tell, its not anyone in the site specifically, i actually think its not an actual spammer or anything, i dont think its a user we all know, i think the admin, the owner of the site did this himself.
