For action, maybe try Black Lagoon, Trigun (first few episodes are a little rough, but it's badass once it gets going), Cowboy Bebop (or anything by the dudes who made this, like Space Dandy and Samurai Champloo), Gurren Lagann was fun... or if you want something crazy and weird maybe watch FLCL (the original episodes only, the new ones are pretty lame).
