• Have you ever wondered what will happen if the internet suddenly stops working (i.e., you cant access all your online accounts, files, etc.)?

Back in the day, when I was still using the floppy disk for my computer science laboratory class (no usb yet), I had this bad experience when a virus corrupted the files in my lab experiment (such a fucking nightmare; a semester worth of codes).

So it made me think that "softwares/softcopies" (e.g., codes, word files, etc.) are volatile (Nothing lasts forever. Forever is just a lie). What if one day, all the pictures and documents that you uploaded in your google drive or cloud storage suddenly disappears?

So in my case I print the photos and documents and put in an album and a binder, respectively. The softcopies are just for back-up.

    How about you?
    Have you considered these things?
Do you have any bad experience such as mine?
    Imagine a world without internet

    Feel free to share.

  • @liliputian1
On this generation we are living, internet connection is much more important than anything as it helps alot
This is how most of us think's how the life will be with no internet.

    No internet

    No internet

I tried living for a month with no phone, or any sort of device that have an access with internet. It wasn't that bad, i mean you get to know what you have been missing in real life, good talks, night walks, vacation on local places, like villages. You get to have fun too.

Financially speaking the world without internet is a disaster, unless we cope how our ancestor's survived with no internet. Cuz they had time using their talents.

    Old age

    Movie theatres be like...

  • @liliputian1 RIP internet then process cremation lol

  • @odin nice boss. I hope that the day when the internet stops will never come as life on earth will be harder.
Nevertheless, it is always a good idea to have a printed copy of all your files and pictures.

  • The Internet is robust.
It's not dependent upon a single machine or cable.
It's a network made up of other computer networks.
    It spans the globe.

Connections cross over continents, under oceans and through space via satellites.
And as the Internet has grown, so has our dependence upon it.
Whenever you download a file, the file comes to your machine in electronic data packets that travel across the Internet.
The packets don't all take the same path -- the traffic routes are dynamic.
If a particular connection is damaged or unresponsive, the data can follow a different path to reach your machine.

This makes the Internet a reliable communications resource.
Even if an entire section of the Internet were to go offline in the wake of a natural disaster or a nuclear attack, other sections could remain functional.
While any data stored on machines that were hit by the disaster might be lost, the Internet itself would remain.

It's almost impossible to imagine a set of circumstances that could cause the Internet to collapse.
It would require destruction on such a widespread scale that the loss of the Internet would probably be the least of our worries.

But under certain conditions if the internet were to shutdown then...

1] Loss of communication: On account of globalization people live far away from each other and rely heavily on Skype, Emails Facebook to make to keep in touch with all their friends and family.
With all the social media and messaging services down, a lot of people all over the globe would lose touch with most of their friends and family.

2] Loss of data: Currently we rely extensively on cloud and streaming services, loss of internet would mean every file will have to be stored offline on hardware and that would mean deleting data which holds lesser value.

3] Loss of lives (related to hospitals): Today millions of hospitals use internet to keep a track of patients files, their medical history, their illness and the medicines prescribed, loss of internet would mean recreating those patient files from scratch and lives will be lost in that time.
Hospitals also use internet to remotely perform surgeries when expert surgeons are unavailable and to monitor the vitals of the critical patients, without the internet these patients will die.

4] Loss of lives (related to economy): Websites like Google, Amazon, employ millions of people, without internet millions of people will be jobless in an instant and heavy addition of smart workforce to a market which will does not have the capacity to accommodate this much cheap labor will lead to slump in wages, and fall in standard of living of millions more.
People will prioritize food and other basic needs over minor illnesses and regular check ups.
Companies which make devices like routers and servers will go bankrupt.
Loss of credit card and regular debt data will make the banks go belly up.
Life savings of people who invested in shares and bonds and even in fixed deposits in banks will be lost.
Economy will collapse and this will lead to a large number of suicides.
The recession of 2008 pushed a lot of people to the edge and now the total collapse of economy will push hundreds of thousands of them to the brink.

5] Collapse of IOT and the basic amenities: In the United States, there's a push to develop the power grids around the nation into a smart grid.
Smart grids could theoretically respond to customer needs more efficiently, conserve power and communicate with one another over Internet connections.
In theory, this system could reduce power outages and other problems.
But if the Internet were to collapse, a smart grid would be crippled.
Massive power outages could become a problem across any country using such a system.

6] Security crisis: As the Internet has become more pervasive, countries have used it to gather intelligence and to spy on one another.
The loss of the Internet would be an enormous blow to intelligence agencies.
Sharing information would become slow and difficult.
Some governments might react to such a situation rashly.
It's impossible to predict how each government would react; however, it's not hard to imagine a series of events that could escalate into a conflict.
Loss of intelligence would also make it easier for terrorists to infiltrate and cause wide spread destruction.

And after reading about all the death and destruction,
Here's the good news -- a total collapse of the Internet would be almost impossible.
The Internet isn't a magic box with an on/off switch.
It's not even a physical thing.
It's a collection of physical things and it's constantly changing.
The Internet isn't the same entity from one moment to the next -- machines are always joining or leaving the Internet.

While there is such a thing as the Internet backbone -- a collection of cables and servers that carry the bulk of data across various networks -- it's not centralized.
There's no plug you could pull out from a socket or a cable you could cut that would cripple the Internet.

It's possible for parts of the Internet to go offline.
In fact, this happens all the time.
Whether it's a particular server that crashes and needs to be rebooted or replaced or a cable under the ocean gets snagged by an anchor, there are events that can disrupt Internet service.
But the effects tend to be isolated and temporary.

The positive way to look at this is to realize that the men and women who helped design the Internet created an amazing tool that's remarkably stable.
And should this beauty called "Internet" stop working...then loss life will be on a scale hitherto undreamt of.

I totally got help from The Internet to write this!

  • @bela lol.hahaha.

  • @obviouslylucifer haha. nice!

Many articles online, in fact, cited remote villages and countries without internet acces.

  • @liliputian1 said in What would happen if the Internet collapsed?:

    India

India has some of the cheapest internet plans on the planet (one of the plans is unlimited 4G data for less than 6 USD per month)

    And net neutrality.

Why else would most of the send bob and vagene people on TWS be from India??

    :smirk:

That a the world would crash and go into panic because so much information is stored online

  • @liliputian1 I would have to hold a memorial service for my erotic novels because there’s no way I’m keeping the hard copies around my house lol.
